Joanna’s presentation felt very real. She engaged us in her presentation as if we were part of her class. Many examples she gave were very helpful and insightful into students day to day life whether it’s inside the classroom or outside. The mood board! What a great idea to check in with your students. A different animal or creature can be brought up along with guinea pigs. What a great way to have a mood theme for the day + excellent way, I find, to engage your students in a “come as you are” way.
Joanna made me feel like she is making every moment with the students count. She shared with us a video she made about how to make a cake. And that seems like, was a creative and neat way to engage your students in assessment and setting criteria. It’s almost like tricking them into reflecting on grades! Joanna showed us how she models what each of the proficiency scales looks likes (emerging, developing, proficient). She encourages peer review, asking, for example, why am I developing here? So I learned that assessment can be fun when students are engaged in the process!
Hosting an Olympics on the last day of school, memes, jokes of the day, mood scales, finger scales, going slow. It was very helpful to see Joanna weave in playful elements in her class. Finally, co-creating rubrics together, as a class is brilliant and I will definitely take that into my classroom!
Thanks for your time, that was inspiring
