Dallas road in Victoria is a special place to go on walks. With Eddy and Rio (partner and dog), we often walk from the James bay neighborhood to Beacon hill park (Also known as Meegan park by the Lekwunge speaking people) and end up by the ocean with, usually, wet feet. Interacting with the salty waters brings us a true sense of peace and joy. As we walk on, we look across the water and clearly notice the Olympic mountains across the Salish sea straight. We look at each other, then at Rio, and voice: “one day we shall go explore the other side!”. And so that day has decided to come. Here we are on the Coho ferry looking at the parliament building of Victoria, waiting for the ferry to cast off. Check Hyperlink for ferry sound!
Our reading week is too short to organize a trip to the US on our bikes. We definitely thought about it more than twice. How could we squeeze in a few days of bike-packing? We concluded that it would have to wait for a longer break and clearer skies. With an increased carbon footprint, we hit the road with our small honda civic. We started in Port Angeles, a small coastal town in Washington State, and drove hugging the coast down south to Oregon state.
The first night, we camped at Kalalock campground.
The name Kalaloch is a corruption of the Quinault term k’–E–le–ok, pronounced Kq–â-lā’–ȯk, meaning “a good place to land”, “canoe launch and landing”, or “sheltered landing”. (Wikipedia)
It was a windy yet quiet night. The campsite was almost empty. The sandbank stretched as far as the eye can see! Check out some pictures!
The next day, after a long walk on the beach, we drive down to see our friends Chris, Mariko, and their future baby. We stayed with them for a few nights and we explored a new neighborhood town. Portland has some really yummy food! A picture is worth a thousand words. The rest of the story of this trip will be supplemented by some pictures and maybe the story will continue in a later post!
Thanks for reading! 🙂
